What do people not understand!?
This has been bugging me since Monday.  I talked to a lot of people and asked them how they celabrated Martin Luther King Jr. day and they all said stuff like, "Slept in", or, "Went to the mall" and other things.  That really bothers me, here is a man that risked anything and everything to insure our rights as American citizens and died for what he believed in.  And yet we completely ignore it and go and treat his day like any other.  He did not do what he did just for African Americans, but for society and the human race itself.  We have cast this day into the shadows and are unable to see that this was a great change in our nation, I believe that Dr. King is one of the great hero's of our time.  Do we not honor those who fought and suffered for our freedom?  Do we not show respect to the fore-fathers of our nation?  Why do we ignore this man, this man who has done everything in his power to make a change for good?  This man, through his example has taught us that we are all equal whether we are black, white , purple, catholic, jewish, or muslum. Let his dream live, let us keep it alive and continue to work to make this world a safe and secure place for everyone.
When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963. Source: Martin Luther King, Jr: The Peaceful Warrior, Pocket Books, NY 1968
